The Creator Economy is an entrepreneurship model that has sprung from Generation Z's desire for flexible working hours and creative control over monetizing their passions. Examples of how Generation Z has created a major shift in entrepreneurship through content creation can be seen by the popularization of Twitch, the slew of YouTube videos, and the enormous success from using social commerce platforms to market, promote, and sell merchandise.
Gen Z has challenged how we view the 'traditional' workplace hours of 9 am - 5 pm. This generation values work-life balance, mental wellness, and purpose in the workplace over their job title and salary, with 77% of them indicating they require a company's commitment to social responsibility when considering a job offer. Remote working opportunities, flexible work schedules, and transparent communication are no longer considered 'perks', but are now considered 'principal elements' of today's Gen Z workforce.
For many decades, mental health issues were considered taboo or 'the elephant in the room'. Gen Z has created a current climate where the topic is openly discussed, leading to normalizing mental health services such as therapy and self-care, along with creating boundaries, thus advocating for mental health support. The consequence of a brand that only illustrates performative activism will be immediate backlash from this generation, and in contrast, the rewards for brands that demonstrate a true commitment to equity will be overwhelming loyalty.

Environmental consciousness isn't optional for Gen Z-it's fundamental to their identity. This generation is driving the demand for environmentally-friendly products, eco-friendly brands, and is involved in climate activism. They have begun to use financial technology (fin tech) apps to manage their finances, to invest early through the investment platform Robin Hood, and to seek multiple income streams through side jobs or passive income options.
Gen Z is using social media to organize grassroots movements in support of social justice issues. Examples of how they have effectively used social media for change include organizing voter registration drives and raising funds for social justice causes.
Generation Z is shaping the future due to their values. As Generation Z begins to emerge as purchasers and consumers, their values will become integrated into the main stream. Companies that do not consider Generation Z’s preference for authenticity, sustainability, and social responsibility will experience significant risks of becoming irrelevant within the marketplace. Educational institutions have begun to shift their curriculum to include an emphasis on digital literacy and entrepreneurship. There is also a trend toward government policy changes to address issues specific to the millennial generation.
Gen Z's strength arises from the collective efforts and commitment to build a fair, sustainable, and technologically driven future. The only way to truly know Generation Z is through an understanding of the changes they have caused within our culture, technology, and society on every level where Generation Z will continue maturing and growing as leaders. The influence of Gen Z will continue growing and have a long-lasting impact on many areas of culture, technology, and society in the future.
